American Gothic tradition begins with Charles Brown"s works, in 19th century, Edgar Allan Poe switches on the Psychological Gothic traditions who combines the themes of goodness and evil with soul terror, and tries to explore the inner struggle in human mind; the temporary writer Hawthorne inherits Poe’s psychological terror traditions and emphasizes criticizing the destruction and devastation of fanatic Puritanism on human minds and souls; until the Southern Renaissance, Flannery O"Connor maximizes the Gothic traditions of religion, terror and violence, exposes the darkness of modern industrial civilization and total devastation of humanity through bloody death description. Hawthorne opens and undertakes the Psychological Gothic traditions that reflect the historical darkness and cruel reality in different periods of American History. |
